Wireless Internet Access: ICASA must sort out Screamer
Telecoms
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 18 April
2011
Screamer
Telecoms is popular in the wireless and broadband industry as a WiMAX operator that provides consumers with telephony and
broadband services. The company claims to run one of the biggest independent telecoms networks in the
world.
The network
has in excess of 350 high sites in South Africa and the company covers in excess of 134 000 sq kilometres. Using
WiFi and WiMAX technology, consumers are offered both uncapped
and capped broadband services. While their transmission network is microwave with automatic alternate routing
and redundancy built in, WiMAX is used in the more populated parts of the country. In sparsely populated areas,
they use WiFi.
