WiMAX: A little too late?
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 31
August 2008
It
has become increasingly evident that the standards-based technology, WiMAX, that makes the delivery of last mile wireless
broadband access possible, is not making inroads as
expected.
The known backers of WiMAX such as Google,
Intel, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and others will have to reconsider their
support for WiMAX or stand to lose millions in the process. The future of WiMAX is not looking good if one
considers that cellular operators are pumping more and more money into 3G, a standards-based cellular technology, and in addition to this, Long Term Evolution (LTE) is set to arrive
in a few years. LTE, which is also a standards-based cellular technology, will deliver broadband speeds many
times higher than even ADSL. This means that by the time WiMAX gets off the ground it will already be too late
because Long Term Evolution (LTE) will ultimately offer broadband speeds of 300Mbit/s and more. WiMAX will
simply not stand a stance and will not be able to compete effectively in the mobile Internet arena.
