Undersea Cable Systems: Neotel to run WACS operating centre

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 17 October 2011

Telecoms operator Neotel recently won a contract to run the primary network operating centre (NOC) of WACS or the West Africa Cable System, which is expected to be ready for commercial service some time in 2012. Neotel has won the contract despite tough competition coming from the likes of Telkom.

What makes Neotel more suitable than players such as Telkom to run the WACS NOC, especially given their track record in the residential market?

Existing data centre serving SEACOM plus access to all undersea cable systems that connect the rest of the world to South Africa.

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) is not 100% sure why the contract to run the WACS NOC was given to Neotel, but we are of the opinion that it is, firstly, because Neotel “…already hosts the Seacom system…” (Neotel wins Wacs cable deal, TechCentral, The Editor, 6 October 2011), and secondly, because Neotel is the only telecoms operator in South Africa that have access to all five undersea cable systems that connect the rest of the world to South Africa (or vice versa!).

In other words, Neotel’s experience in hosting such a network operating centre and having access to all the relevant undersea cable systems might be why the WACS contract was afforded to them.
