Undersea cable systems: Mixed
progress
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 15 January 2008
The
progress of the SEACOM and EASSy (The East African Submarine Cable System) undersea cable systems can be described
as ‘mixed’. Although SEACOM has already entered the cable construction phase, it seems that EASSY has not
entered the construction phase in mid-December last year as promised (if one can take the consortium’s silence
as a sign that construction has not started on time as
promised).
SEACOM
It’s great to read elsewhere that SEACOM is on track for a 2009
debut and will be ready to meet the bandwidth needs of events such as the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
Furthermore, SEACOM is confident that they are going to beat EASSy when it comes to who will be the first to
complete construction on the eastern route to Europe. This comes despite claims made by EASSy that their cable
system will be operational by the end of this year or early next year. It’s also great to read that the SEACOM
cable system will have multiple times the capacity available on SAT3/SAFE, or to be exact, 1.28 Tbps of
capacity.
