Undersea Cable Systems: eFive Telecoms driving new undersea
cable project
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 16 September 2010
SA-based eFive Telecoms is driving a new project that will involve the construction of a new undersea cable system which will link
Brazil, Nigeria, Angola and South Africa. It will be the first system to cut across the Atlantic Ocean between
South America and South Africa.
Is it really necessary for a new undersea cable system, especially along the West African
coast?
Yes.
This is debatable; given the fact that the new undersea cable system can expect tough competition coming from other
undersea cable systems such as the West Africa Cable System (WACS), but ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) is of the
opinion that it will be good for telecoms in South Africa. Increased competition should lead to lower prices and
it will most definitely help to connect South Africa directly to other emerging markets such as Angola, Nigeria,
Russia, Brazil, and most importantly, China and India, especially when it comes to direct foreign investment. It
is after all no secret that China and India are fast emerging as the new economic power houses of the
world.
