Is the research results released by NUS
really that important?
Well, it certainly gives us a clear picture of what’s
really happening in South Africa where fixed-line costs are of
a concern.
‘NUS said the survey was conducted in 14 of the most
important telecommunications markets. These were Australia,
Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the
Netherlands, SA, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the US’ (Telkom
charges are world’s third highest, Phasiwe, Business Day, 17
May 2007).
In other words, it’s not a local comparison of Zimbabwe
and South Africa.
Which country has the highest local call costs in
the world?
Belgium.
‘According to the study, Belgium has the highest local
call costs in the world, charging 0,18 for a standard
three-minute call during peak hours. The Netherlands ranked
second, charging marginally higher than $0,14, and SA was
third, at $0,14’ (Telkom charges are world’s third highest,
Phasiwe, Business Day, 17 May 2007).
In other words, Belgium is charging $0.04 more than South
Africa ‘for a standard three-minute call during peak
hours’.
ADSL
South Africa (Broadband South Africa) welcomes the results of
the research done by NUS. Any thinking person can now once
again see that Telkom hasn’t changed a
bit.
