Uncapped ADSL Broadband: Openweb set to launch new service

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 21 May 2010

ADSL Broadband Provider Openweb is set to launch their new Platinum ADSL Uncapped service on the 1st of June this year. This is despite criticism from consumers pertaining to the high prices Openweb intends to charge for this new service.

Designed for business critical usage…

Openweb’s new Platinum ADSL Uncapped service will be pricey to say the least. However, one should not forget that the relevant service is designed with business critical usage in mind. Although the new service is aimed at the residential/consumer market, it’s not really intended for the Average Joes who don't really want to maximise the performance of their Uncapped ADSL Broadband connections.

It’s a pain in the butt, but the majority of cheap Uncapped ADSL Broadband Packages offered in South Africa are normally inferior to similar packages offered elsewhere in the world, especially in The States and parts of Europe. Connections are being throttled to death in South Africa which leads to high contention ratios and other problems. There are normally too many users making use of the relevant services since the majority of ADSL Broadband Providers in South Africa make use of a ‘high margin, low volume’ business model. In other words, they choose to maximise profits by offering as little bandwidth as possible. This is the very reason why one can expect to pay a premium in South Africa when an ADSL Broadband Provider such as Openweb promises to deliver an Uncapped ADSL Broadband service that’s suitable for business critical usage (low contention ratios, network stability, etc.).

In other words, the situation is far from ideal, but one can understand where Openweb is coming from. This is despite the fact that their new Platinum Uncapped service is way pricier than a similar service offered by MWEB.
