Telkom: Upgrades in
progress, according to technician
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 5 September 2011
According to
Telkom technicians, the roll-out of the mini-DSLAMS and FTTC
upgrades are getting closer.
It was
reported in July that Telkom planned to upgrade their connection speeds and the
planned 20 Mbps and 40 Mbps broadband services which will use the 40 Mbps connections for trials for
video-on-demand. At the time it was speculated that they would use a combination of technologies for the trial,
including VDSL and ADSL2+. VHDSL provides uplink speeds of up to 16 Mbps and down-link speeds of up to 52 Mbps
over a single pair of copper. At the time Telkom's Bashier Sallie said that Telkom wants to continuously reduce
the copper loop lengths, taking fiber to the curb in order to provide higher broadband
speeds.
It has now
been suggested that they will be deploying remote IMAX units to shorten copper local loops in areas surrounding
Telkom's exchanges and then back-haul them to the exchanges
using fiber. Where copper quality is not good enough to deliver high speeds, they will be repaired or copper
will be replaced.
