Telkom plans mobile assault by year
end
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 5
April 2009
South African
consumers can expect to see the launch of Telkom’s very own cellular or cellphone service by the end of the year. We will be able to buy
Telkom-branded cellphones and airtime from Telkom shops.
Direct
competition…
Telkom’s planned
cellphone service will compete directly with the likes of Cell C, MTN and Vodacom. This should come as great
news to The Average Joes in South Africa, because it will certainly force the existing cellular operators to
step up their game and offer us bigger, better and cheaper cellular services. It must be stressed however
that Telkom doesn’t plan to build a national wireless network. They will rather focus on high-density areas
where it will be financially feasible to build wireless networks of their
own.
