Why the move
towards establishing a cellular service of their own?
Mobile services
are key to any future success.
All the signs are
there that an increasing number of people are seeking mobility and the freedom it brings. The freedom to send
a fax while you are on your way to the movies, the freedom to take the dogs for a walk while downloading your
emails, the freedom of having a meeting via the net in a park outside your office, et cetera. This is the
very reason why Telkom has decided to establish a cellular service of their own, because not only will it
enable them to break their dependency on their fixed-line business, but also enable them to grow and prosper
in the years to come because of the mobility it offers.
In addition to
the above, the majority of ADSL users in South Africa will agree that ADSL, which is a wired or fixed-line broadband
technology, is great to have because it offers superior performance when it comes to surfing the net, making
downloads, et cetera. However, in areas where cable theft is at the order of the day, the use of ADSL becomes
a nightmare because it needs fixed-lines (copper, fiber, et cetera) to be operational. This is where mobile
broadband steps in and offers a wireless solution that is not really affected by cable theft (except in
extreme cases).
In other words,
cellular services offer mobility, which is central to any future success in the telecoms arena, in addition
to other solutions.
