Telkom: Internal report alleges fraud and
corruption
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 21 May 2010
Telkom has given an independent forensic company the green light to investigate alleged
corruption and fraud committed by no less than three Telkom senior staff members. This comes after
allegations of corruption and fraud pertaining to the fight against cable theft has surfaced in an internal
Telkom report as early as December last year.
Collusion between senior Telkom staff members and security
companies…
It’s alleged that three Telkom senior staff members are or have been colluding with the
security companies hired to monitor and protect Telkom’s copper network. According to the relevant report the
“…common denominator among them is to forge a very close relationship with vendors, override existing control
mechanisms to the advantage of vendors and sideline cable theft practitioners” (Mail & Guardian, Lloyd
Gedye, 21 May 2010).
In other words, it’s alleged that three senior Telkom staff members have a corrupt
relationship with the security companies that are hired to combat the theft of copper cables that form part
of Telkom’s copper network.
