Telkom might fall flat on its face
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 28 April 2008
Telkom might fall flat on its face when it gets a R3.7bn fine for anti-competitive
behaviour. This will be the case if the telecoms giant loses its challenge in the Pretoria High Court to
proof that the Competition Commission had overstep
boundaries when they referred a certain case to the Competition
Tribunal.
To make a long story short and not to go into all the details
here, Telkom is not happy about the fact that value-added network services (Vans) lodged a complaint about
Telkom’s behaviour at the Competition Commission, and that the Competition Commission, referred the case to
the Competition Tribunal. Telkom feels the Competition Commission had no authority to do so. ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) believes
Telkom is trying to evade the hammer of justice coming down on them by concentrating on technicalities instead
of facing the charges brought against them for anti-competitive behaviour in a manner that commands respect for
the people of South Africa. We all know that Telkom has screwed up big time in the past and even recently when
it comes to anti-competitive behaviour. This is why the direction they are taking in their defence can be seen
as defecation on everything we hold dear in this country. They are instead trying to hide behind ICASA which is clearly not capable of taking them head on and
make sure they pay for the commercial crimes they have committed against the people of South
Africa.
