Skaap: Sheer brilliance and drive

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 19 September 2006

Skaap, a dynamic South African VoIP company, is eager to take Telkom head-on in the market place.

Making international phone calls to friends, family or business colleagues just become a lot cheaper. Skaap have launched a cost-effective, easy-to-use service where savings of 50% or more can be made. Skaap’s international call rates are so ridiculous low that it almost matches Telkom’s local call rates.

“Interest in the Skaap service has been phenomenal and is rapidly growing as people realize that they don’t necessarily require an ADSL line to make cheap international calls. Our rate of sign-ups more than double on a weekly basis. We are simply responding to the great demand for cheaper international calls that exists in this country” says Brett Magrath, MD of Skaap.

Skaap comes with firepower backed by an established partner. “Through Skaap’s partnership with VoIP Service provider Mediaring, a listed Singaporean based Telecommunications Operator, which generated over a billion call-minutes across its global operations in 2005, we have been able to provide our customers with quality of service at very reasonable prices. This has been across the full range of international destinations,” says Magrath.

Previously due to Telkom’s high call rates only a 100 calls were made to international destinations from South Africa for every 200 inbound calls received. Skaap is quickly turning this ratio on its head however.

Telkom for one should take note. This sheep is the one who will lead us out of the desert you created at least in regard tointernational call rates. Skaap will succeed because we are convinced thousands, if not millions of South Africans, will throw in their weight behind Skaap. On the end of the day the only skaapkoppe left will be those who willingly took us for a ride, thinking they would never pay up for the commercial crimes they committed against the people of South Africa.

It will be interesting to see how Telkom and Neotel will respond to Skaap’s sheer brilliance and drive in creating a low cost call environment.
