SEACOM: expected to land as planned

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 12 November 2007

The SEACOM undersea cable in which Neotel has invested $600 million is expected to land successfully in South Africa despite uncertainty in regard to local landing rights.

The bad news…

It’s no secret that Communications Minister, Ivy Matsepe Casaburri, and her clowns have ‘…muddied the waters by demanding that any undersea cable docking in SA must be majority owned by African investors’ (Neotel stands its ground on cable rights, Stones, Business Day, 12 November 2007). She is so adamant in her stance against foreign-owned cables land in South Africa ‘…that she is backing a new — and so far unfunded — $2bn project to lay other cables around Africa’s east and west coasts’ (Neotel stands its ground on cable rights, Stones, Business Day, 12 November 2007).

In other words, Ivy Matsepe Casaburri is doing her best to be a ‘thorn in the flesh’ of foreign investors.
