Local Loop Unbundling
(LLU)
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 21 October 2007
It was made clear at the recent ITWeb Broadband conference in Midrand
that Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is
essential for the improvement of ADSL access and ADSL Broadband
services.
What is Local Loop Unbundling
(LLU)?
According to Wikipedia: ‘Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is the
regulatory process of allowing multiple telecommunications operators use of connections from the telephone
exchange's central office to the customer's premises. The physical wire connection between customer and company
is known as a "local loop," and it is owned by the incumbent local exchange carrier, (also referred to as the
"ILEC," "local exchange," or in the United States, "Baby Bell"’ (Wikipedia).
In other words, LLU is in essence a process that
contributes to the levelling of the telecoms playing field. This process ensures that no telecoms operator is
able to undercut the efforts of other telecoms operators through the manipulation of the local loop.
