Key ICASA councillor steps down
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 10 May
2007
The Icasa councillor responsible for heading the
telecommunications licence conversion process, Mamodupi Mohlala, ‘…has tendered her resignation and asked to be
released from her duties two months early’ (ICASA councillor quits, Vecchiatto, ITWEB, 3 May 2007).
‘Mohlala's resignation letter to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on
Communications, ICASA's oversight body, asks for the three-month notice period required in terms of the law
governing ICASA to be waived to allow her to leave by 1 June’ (ICASA councillor quits, Vecchiatto, ITWEB, 3 May
2007).
In other words, Mohlala is not keen to stay on at Icasa for longer than another
month.
Any reasons for her decision to step down?
Mohlala failed to comment but ‘…it is believed she will join the Pension Fund
Adjudicator – a body that falls under the Financial Services Board’ (ICASA councillor quits, Vecchiatto, ITWEB, 3
May 2007).
In other words, it might be the prospect of a better job that encouraged her to step
down.
How long has she been a councillor at Icasa?
Five years.
‘Mohlala has been an ICASA councillor for the past five years and late last year was
reappointed for a second three-year term’ (ICASA councillor quits, Vecchiatto, ITWEB, 3 May 2007).
In other words, she helped out at Icasa for half a decade.
When must the license conversion process be completed?
By January 2009.
‘…the conversion process must be completed by January 2009’ (ICASA councillor quits,
Vecchiatto, ITWEB, 3 May 2007).
In other words, the licensing conversion process must be completed within the next
2-3
years.
