Internet user base grows 12.5% in 2008

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 1 February 2009

The Internet user base has grown with 12.5% to 4.5 million users in South Africa last year. This according to the Internet Access in South Africa 2008 report produced by World Wide Worx and backed by Cisco Systems.

Highest growth in 7 years…

12.5% growth may seem to be a bit low, but considering the tough economic times that reined supreme in 2008, and the fact that its the highest growth rate experienced in the SA Internet user base since 2001, one can’t help to smile. The is excellent news because it shows that more and more South Africans are starting to see the benefits of getting connected to the Internet, but maybe more importantly, the cost of Internet access has started to come down, making it more affordable to get connected.

An even higher growth rate expected this year…

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) believes ADSL and other broadband Internet users will even see a higher growth rate this year, despite the tough economic conditions that prevail. The primary reason for this is the fact that it’s clear that an all out broadband war has started between the ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in South Africa, and that this war is about to erupt violently (in a figurative sense), especially when the undersea cable system Seacom becomes operational in September this year.
