The long and short of it… 

The long and the short of it, without going into details, is that it seems that government has realised that in order to ensure that the cost of telecoms products and services come down more speedily in South Africa, they need to give ICASA more teeth to bite. It’s after all no secret that ICASA has so far not done a great job when it comes to the regulation of the SA telecoms sector. 

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) welcomes government’s move to strengthen ICASA’s hand, but we should be very careful of a highly political motivated attempt to bring down the cost of telecoms products and services in South Africa. We don’t want to see telecoms operators go out of business in scores, since it will definitely not benefit any of us Average Joes at the end of the day, especially when the quality of telecoms products and services suffers.
