iBurst is aiming at Telkom
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 16
September 2007
The telecoms giant Telkom is in iBurst’s
cross hairs. The wireless Internet access provider is planning to launch services that will ‘…compete directly
against Telkom’s traditional voice and Diginet offerings (iBurst plans to take on Telkom, MyBroadband, 14 September
2007).
Head of Product Development at iBurst South Africa, Antony McKechnie, made it known at the ISPA iWeek conference in
Johannesburg that ‘…iBurst is planning various new services, including a fully fledged voice offering, Metronet
services and WiMax offerings’ (iBurst plans to take on Telkom,
MyBroadband, 14 September 2007).
In other words, it’s clear that iBurst’s plans will result in a head on collision with Telkom.
When will the first of the planned offerings or services launch?
Before the end of the year.
‘…iBurst will launch its iCall v2 offering before the end of the year’ (iBurst plans to take on Telkom,
MyBroadband, 14 September 2007).
In other words, the first of the planned offerings should launch soon.
What will make iCall v2 different from iBurst’s current iCall service?
Incoming calls.
‘While iBurst’s current iCall service allows users to make outbound calls, iCall v2 will allow subscribers to
receive incoming calls on a 087 number’ (iBurst plans to take on Telkom, MyBroadband, 14 September 2007).
In other words, this ‘…service will directly compete against Telkom’s voice offerings, similar to other VANS VoIP
offerings like Vox Telecom’s service and MWEB’s Broadband Talk’ (iBurst plans to take on Telkom, MyBroadband, 14 September
2007).
