The heat is on
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 10 May 2008
This is how one can describe the
mounting pressure on role players to complete Broadband Infraco's African West Coast Cable (AWCC) before the
Soccer World Cup in
2010.
Time is running out and Broadband Infraco’s undersea cable project
needs to be completed in time. Alec Erwin, Public Enterprises Minister, has made it clear that the pressure is
mounting to complete the project. This is despite the fact that Matsepe-Casaburri, Minister of Communications, and her
department wants to see the completion of Uhurunet or the Nepad Broadband ICT Network as well. This must
certainly be the case because soccer is much more important to the Presidency than combatting crime for
instance, despite what they might have to say about the matter, and also because the Presidency has made it
clear that Broadband Infraco’s AWCC is now ‘government’s preferred international undersea cable
inititative.’
