Good growth: ADSL subscriber base

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 4 July 2009

The ADSL Broadband subscriber base has once again shown good growth in Telkom’s previous financial year. Telkom managed to increase the number of ADSL Broadband subscribers with no less than 33% to 548 015 in March this year.

Getting ahead in the broadband race…

Despite the good growth in Telkom’s ADSL subscriber base, a phenomenal 58.1% growth to 188 540 in the number of Do Broadband subscribers and 18.2% growth to 423 196 in the number of TelkomInternet All Access subscribers, Telkom will have an uphill battle to get ahead in the broadband race again. This is especially true after Telkom has sold it’s 51% stake in Vodacom, which is currently the largest broadband service provider in South Africa, with an estimated 720 000 3G/HSDPA data users. Telkom however remains the leading provider of ADSL broadband in South Africa, something we believe is not going to change overnight. The main reason being the fact that players such as Neotel, who are currently screwing up big time, simply do not have the resources and infrastructure needed to tackle Telkom head on when it comes to providing ADSL Internet access.
