The fate of telecoms in South
Africa
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 7
July 2008
The
Altech technology group stands in the center of a court case that will decide the fate of telecoms in South
Africa.
Altech will walk out as the hero or the proverbial villain
depending on the outcome of the lawsuit the group has started. If Altech loses the case, the liberation of the
telecoms sector will take a serious knock, but if they win, the market will be wide open for competition. Altech,
like other companies in the telecoms sector, wants a license that will give them the right to build their own
national communications network. The same rights the likes of MTN, Neotel, Telkom and Vodacom are currently enjoying. Altech is unhappy
about the licensing process, believe that the process is flawed, and wants the process to be reviewed by the
courts.
