30 Mbps a reality in
Pta
ADSL
South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 20 March
2007
Some Pretoria
residents are already enjoying broadband services with
speeds of up to 30 Mbps delivered by Goal Technology
Solutions
(GTS).
The ‘…Rooiwal community in Tshwane is already
speeding along the broadband highway with 30 Mbps connections
at home while trial users in the eastern suburbs of Pretoria
currently have 10 Mbps services’ (30 Mbps broadband services a
reality in Tshwane, MyADSL, 14 March 2007). According to Adrian
McGuire, Managing Director of GTS, ‘…these connections may
spread country wide in mid to late 2007’ (30 Mbps broadband
services a reality in Tshwane, MyADSL, 14 March 2007). In other
words, while some Pretoria residents are already smiling, more
broadband users in South Africa may soon experience broadband
Internet at speeds of up to 30 Mbps delivered by
GTS.
How many homes will GTS be able to
connect per month?
A quick calculation, based on GTS’s plans,
establishes that GTS will be able to connect 50 000 homes per
month by the end of the year.
According to McGuire ‘…a single BPL team can
connect 5000 homes per month, and that GTS plans to have 10
teams operational country wide by the end of 2007’ (30 Mbps
broadband services a reality in Tshwane, MyADSL, 14 March
2007).
Why should we believe GTS this
time?
One can’t blame anyone for asking this
question since GTS has clearly failed to deliver on promises in
the past.
For what it’s worth, McGuire made it clear
that only regulatory issues are holding them back at present
(30 Mbps broadband services a reality in Tshwane, MyADSL, 14
March 2007). No that this comes as a consolation but at least
the dream of seeing cheaper faster broadband in South Africa is
still alive.
ADSL South Africa
(Broadband South Africa) welcomes any efforts to introduce
faster, cheaper broadband services to the South African
market.
