The end of Sentech?

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 21 September 2008

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) predicts that a continue shortfall in funding and plans to phase out consumer offerings completely will mean the end of state-owned broadband signal provider Sentech.

It is no secret that Sentech has been struggling to obtain funding for new and existing projects and that consumers have left the broadband signal provider in droves. In April 2007, ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) reported that Sentech seems to be back on track after Sentech’s struggle to boost the number of MyWireless subscribers has turned for the better. This is after Sentech lowered prices, increased coverage and launched new products. In retrospect, it is clear that Sentech is not back on track but fast falling back into a feeble existence and even worse, into ‘the telecoms graveyard’ where all telecoms failures ultimately end up. A quick scan of Sentech’s recent annual report, reveals that the broadband signal provider’s funding woes not only endangers its status as a going concern, but also affects its attractiveness as an employer. This cannot be good because in tough economical times it is even more critical that employees attract ‘the cream of the crop’ when it comes to hiring and appointing people.
