EASSy has landed
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 16 February 2010
The East African Submarine Cable
System (EASSy), an undersea or optical submarine cable that will connect countries in East Africa to the rest
of the world, has landed at Mtunzini in Kwazulu Natal yesterday
morning.
Landing delayed but celebrations on the
way…
There is ample room to celebrate EASSy’s landing in South Africa
despite delays and the fact that Telkom is EASSy’s landing partner in South
Africa.
EASSy’s landing was planned for last Saturday morning, but bad
weather conditions and logistical problems delayed the landing until Monday morning. This is however minor if one
considers that EASSy is expected to help:
-
Boost South Africa’s international bandwidth
capacity – There is no doubt that EASSy will help to
immensely increase South Africa’s international bandwidth capacity which in turn will help to increase
redundancy. The more redundancy there is, the less problems broadband Internet users will experience
when browsing international websites, making international downloads, etc.
In fact, without getting too technical, by design EASSy can
increase South Africa’s international bandwidth capacity with 1.4Tbps, which is by any standard an enormous
amount of additional capacity.
