Seacom
Afrihost is for one very confident about the
impact that the Seacom undersea cable system is already having on the SA telecoms market, especially where
the breaking of Telkom’s dominance of international bandwidth is of a concern. Afrihost expects that
international bandwidth will even become more affordable when the likes of EASSy (Eastern Africa Submarine
Cable System) and WACS (West Africa Cable System) goes live next year and in 2011.
Regulatory interventions should be expanded…
It seems, like us, that Afrihost
agrees with Vox Telecom’s view that regulatory interventions should be expanded to introduce the following as a
matter of urgency: Carrier
Pre-Selection, Local Number
Portability and
Local Loop Unbundling. This is necessary, not
only to level the telecoms playing field so that smaller players can compete effectively, but also to lower the
high cost of telecoms in SA.
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) welcomes Afrihost’s
positive outlook where the cost of ADSL Broadband in South Africa is of a concern. It is good to see that Afrihost
is willing to take some pain in order to support their point of view.
