Corruption at Telkom?

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 19 April 2007

One can’t reject allegations of corruption at Telkom especially since well-known trade union Solidarity ‘…has asked for the mandate of a commission of inquiry into allegations of corruption at Telkom to be widened’ (Solidarity asks for exhaustive investigation into Telkom corruption allegations, MyADSL, 11 April 2007).

Hopefully the proverbial rotten apple will soon crack open under all the pressure especially since new allegations of corruption at Telkom had come to the surface. It seems for one that Telkom’s recent acquisition of Nigerian’s private telephone operator, Multi-Links, at US$280m didn’t go down without irregularities. ‘An article on the Financial Mail website alleges that Telkom paid $20m more than the asking price of Multi-Links’ owners’ (Solidarity asks for exhaustive investigation into Telkom corruption allegations, MyADSL, 11 April 2007).

In other words, more than a R140m allegedly ended up in the wrong pockets or were wasted.

‘Solidarity yesterday asked the Department of Communications to institute an independent commission of inquiry into the problems at Telkom. The trade union would like the true reason for the resignation of Telkom CEO Mr Papi Molotsane to emerge from the inquiry and also wants government interference in Telkom deals to be investigated’ (Solidarity asks for exhaustive investigation into Telkom corruption allegations, MyADSL, 11 April 2007).

In other words, like us Solidarity wants real answers to questions relating to corruption at Telkom.

Why all the concern?

Stable conditions.

Solidarity made it clear that they ‘…would like to see stable conditions that are conducive to productivity at Telkom. The current climate of untested allegations and the sudden resignation of the CEO are harmful to both the company and its employees’ (Solidarity asks for exhaustive investigation into Telkom corruption allegations, MyADSL, 11 April 2007).

In other words, Solidarity like others is concerned because productivity at Telkom is already taking a knock at this stage.

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) wishes all parties involved in getting us real answers pertaining to corruption at Telkom the best of luck in their endeavours.
