Communications Minister: Mohlala says no to golden
handshakes
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 23 August 2010
Communications Minister, Siphiwe Nyanda,
should be forced to make space for Mamodupi Mohlala, the Director General of Communications he sacked in
July this year. This comes after Mohlala’s refusal to accept two golden handshakes, one made last month worth
R1.6m, and the second one made last week worth R2.9m (plus an additional amount of R200 000 to cover any legal
costs she may incur).
Taxpayers’ money should not be wasted…
Mohlala has so far refused to
accept any golden handshake from government. It’s important to her to earn the money. In addition, she’s
adamant that taxpayers’ money should not be wasted to get rid of people.
It is seldom that one finds a
government official who has not only refused to go along with corruption, but who has refused two golden
handshakes in a row now.
Mohlala seeks the reversal of the decision to sack her and a transfer to a suitable post of equal standing
elsewhere in the public sector. If this is
not a reflection of a person with a high level of integrity then we will certainly be hard pressed to find a more
suitable candidate in government. She refused to go along with corruption since it’s no secret that she
refused to approve tenders to people with close ties to Nyanda and a company with close ties to him, General Nyanda
Security Services (as alleged in a Business Day report). The company is known as Abalozi Security Risk Advisory
Services today in which Nyanda’s children have a 45% stake via the Mphephethwa Trust.
Nyanda and this very same company were recently implicated in no less than two tender scandals of R55m and R20m
respectively.
In other words, Mohlala is clearly not going to take any of it by sitting down, since she feels for one that it's
wrong to waste taxpayers' money.
