Which one will come out on top? ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 17 December 2007 Will it be Super ADSL, Fibre to the home, HSPA or WiMAX that will come out on top? Which of these broadband technologies is the best to deliver affordable broadband over the last mile?
The intention with this article is not to identify the broadband technology that will offer the ultimate broadband experience but rather to identify which broadband technology will deliver broadband in the most cost-effective way. The reason for this is because ‘…even with the best broadband delivery to your home or office, the ultimate broadband experience will still depend on what happens after you reach the ISP, how much bandwidth they have to the world where at this stage most content resides and what is their contention ratio?’ (Broadband Technology Shootout, EngineerIT, Hans van de Groenendaal, 13 December 2007). In other words, a dodgy experience is possible even when the best of broadband technologies are deployed simply because some ISPs are worse than others. |
