Cellphone VoIP
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 9 September
2007
Three former classmates have landed the solution to South Africa’s high cellphone charges:
Cellphone VoIP. This comes while the telecoms regulator is still dragging feet on the issue
of high cellphone charges in South Africa.
Rapelang Rabana, Lungisa Matshoba and Wilter du Toit founded a company called Yeigo
in December 2005. This University of Cape Town graduates’ company will use a cellphone-based VoIP network to offer
cheap rates as well as free cellphone calls to Yeigo registered users.
‘It took them two years to complete software features and the system was commercially
launched in February this year’ (Cellphone VoIP set to slash telecoms costs, Mochiko, 6 September 2007).
Does cellphone VoIP offer more benefits than fixed-line
VoIP?
Yes.
Cellphone VoIP is a natural extension to fixed-line VoIP that’s already used by many
businesses. It ‘…offers greater flexibility and bigger savings than fixed-line VoIP’ (Cellphone VoIP set to slash
telecoms costs, Mochiko, 6 September 2007).
Furthermore, according to the Non-Executive Chairman of Yeigo and Founder of Pastel
Software, Ivan Ferrer: “Yeigo is easily accessible and will see businesses saving thousands of rands on their
telecoms costs” (Cellphone VoIP set to slash telecoms costs, Mochiko, 6 September 2007).
In other words, although cellphone VoIP has more benefits than fixed-line VoIP, the
two systems are complementing each
other.
