Buy Telkom shares

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 9 September 2007

Mark Shuttleworth’s lawyer, Michael Alachouzos, recently made it known at an iWeek conference, that the best way to put some pressure on Telkom is to become shareholders of the company.

This comes after IT billionaire Mark Shuttleworth recently came out in support of The Telecoms Action Group (TAG) by supplying ‘...the TAG with the needed resources to fund the ‘Telkom-share campaign’ as well as other initiatives in the consumer space’ (Shuttleworth funds anti-Telkom campaign, MyBroadband, 7 September 2007).

What is the ‘Telkom-share campaign’?

It is one of the anti-Telkom campaigns managed by the TAG.

‘…any shareholder, even people with a single share, has various rights, including looking at the company’s share register and attending its Annual General Meetings’ (Shuttleworth funds anti-Telkom campaign, MyBroadband, 7 September 2007). Furthermore, ‘…any 100 shareholders of a company can convene a general meeting, giving this congregation certain rights…’ and ‘…the TAG has a lot of shares, and have started to hand out these shares to individuals with the aim of eventually convening such a meeting’ (Shuttleworth funds anti-Telkom campaign, MyBroadband, 7 September 2007).

In other words, the campaign is about getting in the position to voice your concerns at a general meeting by becoming a shareholder.

‘…while money from the Shuttleworth Foundation is funding this project, the Telkom shares were bought with money left over from consumer donations for the TAG’s initial advertising campaign’ (Shuttleworth funds anti-Telkom campaign, MyBroadband, 7 September 2007).

In other words, it’s clear that the ‘Telkom-share campaign’ is a consumer driven campaign despite the fact that its funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation.

‘So far the TAG has transferred shares to around 70 individuals, but it is an ongoing project which is expected to reach many more individuals in the next few months’ (Shuttleworth funds anti-Telkom campaign, MyBroadband, 7 September 2007).

In other words, it’s clear that a lot of progress has already been made if one keeps the 100 shareholders figure in mind.

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) welcomes Shuttleworth’s support for the TAG.
