Broadband infrastructure injection
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 9 June
2009
The West Coast of
Africa is going to receive an USD240m broadband infrastructure injection in the form of a new undersea
optical fiber cable system called the Main One Cable System. This comes after the African Finance Corporation
(AFC) and its partners announced earlier this week that they have closed a
deal.
West Coast of Africa…
The Main One Cable System will cover approximately 7000 km and
provide additional broadband or telecoms capacity to countries along the West Coast of Africa (Canary Islands, Côte
d’ Ivoire, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Portugal and Senegal). In fact, it will deliver an additional 1.92 Tbps
(terabit per second) of bandwidth to the region.
Live in 2010…
The Main One Cable System is expected to go live in 2010 and will
benefit an estimated 250 million people in West Africa. In addition, the new undersea cable system will play a
vital role in helping to lower communication costs in the West Africa region.
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa) welcomes the addition of another undersea cable system along the Africa coast. It can only help to
ensure a bright future for telecoms in Africa, especially West Africa.
