Bonus time at Telkom Media
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 18
January 2009
Telkom Media, a subsidiary of Telkom,
has paid workers huge bonuses last year in a bid to retain them, despite the fact that they only come to work
for an hour or so per day to do nothing.
The last straw for Telkom shareholders…
This must come as the
last straw for many Telkom shareholders, who already had to stomach the surprise announcement in May last year
that the Telkom board wants to sell off Telkom’s stake in Telkom Media, after Telkom already spent R400m plus to
launch the company. This has effectively thrown a spanner in the works because it has stalled the company,
leaving Telkom Media staff bored and demoralized because they have nothing to do. It is however unacceptable
that bonuses are paid out to Telkom Media staff when the company is making no profits, especially considering
that Telkom is planning to cut funding to Telkom Media with almost 30% to R5.3bn.
