The best news in years

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 2 November 2008

A judge has denied the Minister of Communications leave to appeal the ICASA/VANs judgment. This is probably the best news to hit the SA telecoms industry in years.

The SA telecoms playing field is now more level than ever before…

ADSL and other broadband users in South Africa have much to celebrate after Acting Judge N. Davis has stunned the Minister of Communications, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri (alias ‘Poison Ivy’), by indicating that any application by the Minister for Leave to Appeal the ICASA/VANs judgment will be refused on all points with cost.

In other words, ‘Poison Ivy’s’ attempt to overturn an earlier court ruling, which ruled that ICASA’s licensing process is flawed and that Value Added Service Providers (VANs) such as Altech have the right to build their own networks, has failed. If she presses ahead she will only waste more of the taxpayer’s money.
