Altech's East Africa strategy

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 12 October 2008

It was enlightening to read elsewhere this week that broadband provider Altech is making inroads in the telecoms industry in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, et cetera) despite worsening economic conditions.

Altech has recently overturned the card tables at ICASA...

This comes after the company, which is part of the JSE-listed Altron Group, went to Court to force the review of ICASA’s licensing process and won. This has made Altech famous in the telecoms industry despite the Minister of Telecommunications, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri’s decision to appeal the high court’s decision. The Court has in effect ruled that ICASA’s licensing process is flawed and that Value Added Service Providers (VANs) such as Altech have the right to build their own networks. ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), like many lawyers, believes that Matsepe-Casaburri’sappeal can be described as ‘weak’ at best.
