ADSL Fixed Line Providers

Neotel vs Telkom

There are currently two ADSL fixed line providers or infrastructure-based networks in South Africa, Neotel and Telkom. You need to choose one of them if you prefer not to go with a Broadband wireless connection. Otherwise be sure to check out our Wireless Broadband Providers list.

Remember: When considering subscribing to an ADSL Broadband service the traditional way, you have to look at both the ADSL line and the ADSL Broadband Provider  to get you connected. One common error people make is that they think they only have to pay for the ADSL line - and then are surprised that they have to fork out extra for the service provider.

The alternative way or new way of subscribing to ADSL Broadband is much easier. Be sure to visit our One Price ADSL Broadband page for more details.

Neotel

Neotel doesn't offer ADSL yet but have plans to introduce a variety of voice and data services (including high speed Internet and true broadband access services) for individual consumers and SMMEs in South Africa.

Neotel has launched the first of their converged wireless consumer packages in April this year. The NeoConnect Prime 10G package, alhough only available to consumers in certain parts of Pretoria and Johannesburg at this stage, is going to take the telecoms market in South Africa by storm. The package/bundle include a wireless Internet, voice and SMS offering which offers excellent value for money. High-end users and small businesses, the targeted market segment of the NeoConnect Prime 10 G package, can get 10 GB of bandwidth, 1000 Neotel to Neotel call minutes, 30 Local and Regional Neotel to Telkom call minutes and 50 Neotel to Neotel SMS’s per month at a price of R599 per month all costs included (VAT, device charges, service rentals, et cetera).

Neotel has launched other converged wireless consumer packages in the mean time which offer quality and affordability.

Be sure to visit Neotel's website for more info in regards to pricing, et cetera.

Telkom

A Telkom ADSL line is one of the most cost effective ADSL options at the moment. This may change later when Neotel roll out ADSL services. When we write one of the most cost effective ADSL options, we don't mean Telkom ADSL is cheap. In fact, it is horrendously priced when compared to countries overseas but it's still cheaper than most of the wireless offerings.

Which line to buy you might ask? If you:

  • Use the web to download medium - large files  - get the 384kps line .
  • Use the web for business  with more than one user  connected - get the 512kps line .
  • If you have a business  with serious internet and bandwidth needs  - get the 1024kps line .

Once your line has been installed, you can now register with an ADSL Internet Service Provider (ADSL ISP).
