ADSL Crime Alert

In this section of ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) we intend to bring you info on scams and  other criminal activities in South Africa. This is so that you and your loved ones don't fall prey to the heartless scum of the earth.

It's no secret that crime is rampant here in South Africa and elsewhere and that governments spend a lot of money every year to convince you otherwise. We at ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) believe that we will only be able to combat this problem effectively by dealing in reality.

In other words, use your common sense. Don't let them steal it from you... unity build on common sense is the only unity that will last. Of course we can't go into details here but we're sure many of you will grasp the wisdom of this now or later in your lives.

WE WANT YOU!

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) wants YOU to help us fight crime by keeping yourself informed about the schemes and scams out there. This will help you to deal more effectively with almost anything they can possibly throw at you, online as well as offline. Your ADSL or Internet connection is a weapon that can be used for or against evil.

The choice is yours...

We trust that you will make the correct decision because your future and the future of your children depend on it. You can do this by sending us any information you think your fellow South Africans might find useful in the fight against crime.

Please make use of our secure online contact form to send us your crime fighting tips or other relevant info.

Please note: The info on this page might not contain all the latest info on schemes and scams, but please keep in mind that some of the info that are old to you might still be new to others.

DON'T FLASH HEADLIGHTS AT ANY CAR WITH NO LIGHTS ON!!

Police officers working with the DARE program have issued this Warning:

If you are driving after dark and see and on-coming car with no headlights on, DO NOT FLASH YOUR LIGHTS AT THEM!

This is a common Bloods member "initiation game" that goes like this:

The new gang member under initiation drives along with no headlights, and the first car to flash their headlights at him is now his "target.” He is now required to turn around and chase that car, then shoot and kill every individual in the vehicle in order to complete his initiation requirements. Police Depts. across the nation are being warned. Their intent is to have all the "new bloods" nationwide drive around on Friday and Saturday nights with their headlights off.

In order to be accepted into the gang, they have to shoot and kill all individuals in the first auto that does a courtesy flash to warn them that their lights are Off. Make sure you share this information with all the drivers in your Family!

Please forward this message to all your friends and family members to inform them about this initiation ritual.

Kind Regards,

Nick Potgieter

Community Policing Manager, Chubb Electronic Security.

KEEP YOUR CHILDREN AWAY FROM ADULT CHAT LINES.

We've received the following email from a concerned parent:

Hi,

My young son called an adult chat line 0- giving a false name and age. The number was toll free (086 111 4325). He was told his call would cost R100 and he would have to pay within a week. He misunderstood this, thinking it would be charged to his cell phone. Anyway, he made a couple of calls – this being on February 17, 2007. He received a call yesterday from a “Debt Collector” telling him he was wanted for fraud and that he needed to pay R2,100 into ABSA Account 4064803163 in the name of L. Carreira. My son immediately phoned me and told me he was “in trouble”. I called the chat line who gave me the number 039 312 0292. I subsequently called this number and spoke to “D.J. Viljoen” who claims to be a debt collector for “Our Way” – the chat line. He assured me his is a legitimate business and he would discount the sum (now referred to as R2,800) if it was paid by Friday. I told him that he was trying to collect monies from a minor and he was unfazed by that. I have now checked with the Debt Collection Council of South Africa and there is no-one registered in this name. I suspect this is a scam. Some kids are probably terrified to tell their parents and probably do crazy things to raise the money to pay their “debt”. I’d love to know how R100 can turn into a “debt” of R2,000+ and whether even a registered debt collector can legitimately pursue a minor for money.

Thank you for this service

Another email we received from a concerned parent in regards to the same scam:

I have just read your crime alert, and “D.J. Viljoen is back demanding money for a 'telephone call made' requesting and erotic account", asking for the monies to be deposited in an ABSA account 4068162563 under the name of OUR WAY his telephone numbers are 039 3157224 and 0796184614.

IF YOUR ELECTRIC GATE DOESN'T OPEN WHEN YOU ARRIVE HOME, DON'T GET OUT OF YOUR CAR TO INSPECT. DRIVE AWAY AND PHONE YOUR SECURITY COMPANY OR  THE POLICE.

Please inform all your friends and family.

Hijackers tie your electric gate with cable ties.

When you arrive at your gate, it will not open. You then get out of the car to inspect the gate and that's when they strike. If your gate does not open, drive away and phone your security company or the Police.
