ADSL Broadband: Uncapped ADSL Broadband is a myth

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 23 June 2010

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) is still of the opinion that when it comes to Uncapped ADSL Broadband Packages, the tendency of many ADSL Broadband Providers to deploy punitive measures against high-end users (‘bandwidth hogs’) must be stopped.

Afrihost from hero to zero…

Afrihost has gone from hero to zero in the eyes of many high-end ADSL Broadband users after announcing changes to the terms and conditions governing their Uncapped ADSL Broadband offerings/accounts. It basically boils down to this: Punish those who use the most bandwidth despite the fact that they are subscribed to Uncapped ADSL Broadband Packages.

Without going into all the details here, the excuse or reason given by Afrihost is that about 7% of their clients are consuming most of the bandwidth which is available to Afrihost’s entire client base. This leads to a situation where the service experience of all clients on Afrihost’s network is negatively affected. This is true, but why advertise and sell your ADSL Broadband services as ‘uncapped’ when it’s clearly not the case??? Why not rather advertise and sell the relevant packages as ‘capped accounts with high usage limits (100GB per month, 140GB per month, etc.)’ or as ‘semi-uncapped accounts’???

The argument of some that high-end users mostly download illegal torrents or illegally distribute copyright material is also not of relevance, since it’s not the legality of downloads or anything down those lines that are under scrutiny here, but the fact that ADSL Broadband Packages which are 'capped' are being advertised and sold as ‘uncapped’ which is certainly false and misleading.
