ADSL Broadband: Screamer Telecoms exits ADSL
market
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 7 June 2010
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) is not surprised that
Screamer Telecoms has crash landed and exited the ADSL market on the 31st of May. We have warned as early as last
year that the Average Joes want to see cheaper ADSL Broadband, but not at the shocking service levels
experienced from the likes of Screamer Telecoms.
ADSL price war…
It’s no secret that the cost of ADSL Broadband to the Average Joes in South
Africa has come down considerably over the last year, especially in recent months, as more and more ADSL Broadband Providers joined the
ADSL price war. One can thus expect that more than one ADSL Broadband Provider will not make it, especially
given the fact that cheap substandard ADSL Broadband offerings will not go
down well with most of the Average Joes in South Africa.
For example: Screamer Telecoms
was among the first ADSL Broadband Providers to trigger an ADSL price war when they entered the ADSL market with
Uncapped ADSL Broadband accounts starting
from R399 per month in November 2009. It was welcomed at the time, but their shocking service levels cost them dearly at the end. However, we will remain
grateful to Screamer Telecoms for helping to start the ADSL price war, especially given the fact that the cost
of Uncapped ADSL Broadband has dropped considerably since then. In fact, at this stage one can get Uncapped ADSL
Broadband for less than R200 per month or less than R10 per GB.
In other words, it’s clear that the ADSL price war has claimed its first notable victim,
namely Screamer Telecoms, and despite their inability to survive in the ADSL market for whatever reason, we
will be forever grateful for the actions they took to help start an ADSL price war in South
Africa.
