It has come somewhat as a surprise that the man who has led MWEB to greatness has resigned. He has indicated that he wants to pursue business interests outside the Internet Service Provider (ISP) sector. In addition, it is no secret that Jansen has been quite vocal about the congestion experienced on the ADSL network in South Africa, which is a problem for many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and ADSL users alike. In fact, the truth be told, ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) finds it a bit strange that the man who has been instrumental in the introduction of ‘Uncapped ADSL’ in South Africa is complaining about ADSL network congestion. Anyhow, we welcomed Jansen’s push for a naked ADSL regime in South Africa for one, where Telkom will not be able to bundle a compulsory voice service with the ADSL data service. This is despite the fact that the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has made a clear U-turn in regards to the introduction of Naked ADSL in South Africa, effectively giving the green light to Telkom. In terms of Jansen’s replacement, it seems that Theron’s extensive experience in local and international markets will serve MWEB and the ISP industry in South Africa well. ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) truly hopes that Theron will continue the fight for naked ADSL once Jansen is gone.
