ADSL Broadband: ICASA Councilor deserves a
medal
ADSL South Africa (Broadband South
Africa), 21 May 2010
William Stucke, industry expert and ICASA Councilor, deserves a medal, not for bravery or anything down those lines, but for
he’s argument that we for one should not be content with relatively slow ADSL line speeds (fixed-line speeds) in South
Africa.
100Mbps and greater…
It’s no secret that we’ve been stuck with a maximum ADSL line speed of
4Mbps for the last few years while Mobile Broadband users are already enjoy speeds of up to 21.1Mbps. This
makes Telkom’s planned ADSL line speed increase to 10Mbps in the not so distant future lacking to say
the least. This is true if we value Stucke’s opinion that we should rather aim for broadband speeds of
100Mbps or greater (1Gbps).
A strange concept…
According to Stucke, who spoke at the recent Techcentral Broadband Debate, the strange
concept of ‘cap size’ came about because Telkom wanted to drive the message home that international bandwidth is
pricey. This is also the reason why the cap size was set at 3GB, which is according to Stucke, simply not enough if one really wants to utilise the power
of the Internet.
For example: It’s no secret that one needs quite a bit of bandwidth in order to watch movies or play games online. 3GB is simply not enough.
