ADSL Broadband: A good start for Africa INX

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 23 August 2010

Africa INX or Africa Independent Network Exchange, South Africa’s first independent network exchange, deserves five stars for scrapping plans to launch Uncapped ADSL Broadband services. This definitely equates to a good start for Africa INX if one considers their reason for doing so.

Uncapped ADSL Broadband not feasible in South Africa…

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) is of the opinion that Africa INX deserves five stars for the recent decision not to launch Uncapped ADSL Broadband services. They’ve made it clear that a real Uncapped ADSL Broadband model is currently not feasible in South Africa without compromising service levels.

It can be expected that some will hate Africa INX for taking that decision, especially ADSL Broadband Providers that are in the business of milking the consumer no matter the cost in terms of service levels, etc. Needless to say, Africa INX has our full support. First of all, it’s clear that if Africa INX ever offers Uncapped ADSL Broadband services, it can be expected to be the real deal and not ADSL Broadband services that are ‘capped,’ but advertised as ‘uncapped adsl’. It is after all no secret that high-end users or 'bandwidth hogs' constantly face punitive measures for daring to go over bandwidth limits set on services that are supposed to be ‘uncapped’ with no limits or restrictions whatsoever (in terms of bandwidth usage). They are blamed for poor service levels, but in reality the South African Internet Exchange (SAIX) and their partners should be blamed for the state of affairs, since it’s clear that an Uncapped ADSL Broadband model is not really feasible in South Africa at this stage.

In other words, given the above, it’s clear that Africa INX has taken a conscience decision not to rip-off us Average Joes. In addition, it’s clear that they want to ensure better service levels through their offerings than what the norm is currently in the ADSL Broadband market.
