100GB ADSL service

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa), 19 April 2007

Internet Solutions (IS) has announced ‘…the immediate availability of their new Business ADSL 100GB service’ (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007).

What’s different with this new service?

No linking to a specific access rate.

‘With the new service, IS is moving away from linking its Business ADSL services to the access rate (i.e. 384, 512, or “up to 4Mbps”)’ (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007). According to IS: “Firstly, the access rate can vary depending on geographic location, copper quality, and a multitude of other factors; secondly, as access rates increase, there is less significance attached to how fast you connect, and more emphasis on what you can do with the service” (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007).

In other words, ‘…the new 100GB service takes advantage of the various access speeds available on the market today’ (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007).

Manager for Internet Solutions’ Access Solutions, Mark Strathmore explains: “As an example, if you are reading this at work, it is likely you are on an Ethernet connection, connected at 100Mbps to your company’s network. However, it is extremely improbable that your company has a 100Mbps connection to the Internet - especially if there is more than one employee in your company! For this reason, we accept that notwithstanding your fast connection to the corporate LAN, and given that Internet bandwidth is finite, there must be some mechanism to fairly distribute bandwidth to users” (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007).

In other words, it’s safe to say that the new service fairly distributes bandwidth to users.

How is IS positioning this new service?

‘IS is positioning the Business ADSL 100GB service to ideally address user requirements for a business related ADSL service with fixed IP addresses, uncapped usage, router included, and additional services such as fax and Anti-Spam accounts’ (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007).

In other words, if you’re a business owner and fixed IP addresses, uncapped usage, et cetera sound like your cup of tea, you would probably welcome IS’s new ADSL service.

What will happen when the 100GB threshold is reached?

The service will be throttled to a lower connection speed.

‘IS Business ADSL 100GB service is uncapped, and the ‘100GB’ represents a threshold at which IS will limit the connection speed in order to prevent abuse. After the 100 GB threshold is reached users will be throttled to a speed of 128 Kbps’ (New 100GB Business ADSL uncapped service from Internet Solutions, MyADSL, 18 April 2007).
